Analyse of Kodigahayata teledrama

                           [KODIGAHAYATA]

Introduction: In recent years, Sri Lankan TV dramas have shifted significantly, moving away from the long-established dominance of reality TV programs. This transformation explores the historical roots of Sri Lanka's television drama culture, tracing its beginnings to the early 1980s when television was introduced to the Sri Lankan audience. Notable productions like "Paligu Manike," "Yashorawa," and "Dudaruwo" initially enjoyed high demand and ratings. However, even these quality productions eventually succumbed to commercial pressures, particularly in the late 1990s when "Dudaruwo" experienced a decline in its audience due to excessive advertisements. This background marked the inception of a concerning trend in Sri Lankan TV drama, driven by the growing intrusion of commercial interests.

Storyline

Mahesh, an ambitious married man, living in a Slum near Colombo, carry out a murder contract. He gets caught on the same day. The story goes around the invisible forces who act behind the scenes and looks deep into the related human lives.

This context provides the backdrop for examining the present state of TV dramas, which have evolved to become more audience-oriented regarding narrativity and presentation. Yet, they continue to grapple with the challenges posed by the commercial and market-oriented perspectives within Sri Lanka's media industry. This paper critically analyzes the current state of ITN TV drama, 'Kodi Gaha Yata,' delving into its ability to capture audience interest and its concurrent struggle against the commercial and market-oriented practices in Sri Lanka's media industry.

Content: The intrusion of commercial interests and their impact on underlying values is strikingly evident in the 'Kodi Gaha Yata' TV drama case. Notably, the unnecessary prolongation of the drama and the adverse effects of numerous advertisements have emerged as central concerns. 'Kodi Gaha Yata' reflects the corruption that pervades various aspects of Sri Lankan society, spanning the economy, culture, society, law, religion, politics, police, family, love, and sex. Simultaneously, it offers a realistic portrayal of the drama's struggle within the media and the market's challenging political economy, especially within ITN TV.

The once-celebrated 'Kodi Gaha Yata,' renowned for its high audience ratings and exceptional theatrical performances encompassing plot, narrative, and acting, has gradually lost its audience's interest. The decline in quality can be attributed to excessive advertisements and a diminishing consistency in the plot, narrative, and acting. This situation underscores the detrimental impact of prioritizing market needs and financial gain at the expense of artistic appreciation of Sri Lankan art, media products, and the cultural industry.

This paper argues that the Sri Lankan media industry and its economic context often prioritize profit over developing a robust art industry and cultural market. In doing so, they overlook the audience's interest in well-crafted art and aesthetic forms that can be broadcast through TV channels and the communication industry. National, state and private media institutions prioritize financial goals, often neglecting the qualitative appreciation of their productions and their audiences' genuine cultural and artistic needs.

In conclusion, this pattern inadvertently devalues consumer market preferences, as the media and advertising industries inadequately understand the psychological connection between the audience and the art they consume. The focus of media and advertisement companies is often solely based on financial expectations, neglecting the intricate dynamics of audience interaction with artistic and aesthetic content. This myopic approach impacts both the consumer market and the appreciation of art, as it fails to recognize the nuances of the audience's mindset.
